I suppose this could be included with that classic debate about American tourism and adhering to foreign laws.
Apparently, in Grenada, an island sustained in large part by its tourist draw, it is illegal for same sex couples to display affection toward one another. A law apparently never crossed until a recent gaggle of tourists offended local sensibilities by being gay and on vacation.
I’d imagine there was some serious hand holding going on in the streets of Grenada. Perhaps a kiss or two over a golden sunset, because hey, that’s what happens in the Caribbean. And that’s fine, as long as you’re a heterosexual couple.
So, there’s been an outcry from Grenadian law enforcement and church officials, and while the minister of tourism, Dr. Clarice Modeste Cur-wan, expresses her “disgust,” and firm belief that people should stifle their gayness while on the soil of Grenada, she says that she can’t put up a sign barring gay people from the country all together.
Them’s the breaks, Clarice.
All this aside, the first all gay cruise set to dock in Grenada is still planning to pull into port on December 26th. Until then, we can only wait to see how Grenada’s citizens and the cruisers (who probably want a vacation more than they want a civil rights demonstration) will handle the landmark event.
